Leadership
Team & Executive Performance
Senior teams that work as a team on the things only they can do.
The challenge
What we usually find
- The executive team is a group of strong individuals rather than a functioning team.
- Meetings are full but decisions are slow, revisited or quietly ignored.
- Tension at the top is being felt throughout the organisation.
What good looks like
Where organisations want to get to
- A shared agenda, honest dialogue and decisions that hold.
- Clear collective accountability for enterprise performance.
- A team that gets better at working together under pressure.
In practice
Helping senior teams perform as a team
A senior leadership team has responsibilities that go beyond the functions represented around the table. Its members have to make decisions for the organisation as a whole, work through disagreement, hold one another to account and remain effective together when the business is under pressure. Strong individual leaders do not automatically make a strong leadership team.
Our work tends to start with what is actually happening in the team rather than with a generic model of team effectiveness. The issue might be strategy, decision-making, relationships, accountability, organisational change or simply the way the team uses its time together. We work with those issues in the context of the team's real business agenda, because that is where behaviours are most visible and where improvements in the way the team operates can make a difference to the wider organisation.
