Leadership in Complex Clinical Environments

Leadership · Team Effectiveness · Organisational Capability

Introduction

Clemorton has worked with NHS and healthcare teams in environments where leadership takes place alongside significant professional, operational and clinical pressures.

This has included work with clinical teams and senior professionals where leadership, communication and teamwork matter enormously to how people work together.

The Challenge

Healthcare professionals often move into positions of leadership because of their clinical expertise.

The skills that make someone an excellent clinician are not necessarily the same skills required to lead colleagues, manage difficult conversations, create accountability or build an effective team.

At the same time, development has to respect the expertise and realities of people working in demanding clinical environments.

What We Did

Clemorton has worked with healthcare professionals and teams on leadership, communication, team effectiveness and management capability.

The approach has focused on real workplace situations rather than abstract leadership models, creating opportunities for participants to examine how their own behaviour affects colleagues, teams and the wider working environment.

Our work has included engagement with NHS clinical teams, including intensive care and anaesthetic environments.

The Impact of the Work

The work has helped healthcare professionals consider leadership as part of their professional responsibility rather than something separate from their clinical role.

It has also created opportunities for teams to discuss issues around communication, behaviour, relationships and leadership that can be difficult to address during normal operational activity.

The Clemorton Perspective

Professional expertise and leadership capability are different things.

Organisations get the best from highly skilled people when they support them to develop both.

In healthcare, that distinction matters enormously.
