Developing Leadership and Commercial Capability Internationally

Leadership · Commercial Performance · Organisational Capability

The Situation

Clemorton has worked with Unilode in an international aviation and logistics environment where leadership, customer relationships and commercial performance all have a direct influence on business performance.

The work drew on the combined experience of Stuart Maddocks and Andy Clemson and Clemorton's long-standing experience within aviation.

The Challenge

Leadership development in an operational business needs to connect with the reality of the organisation.

Managers are balancing customers, people, operational demands, commercial pressures and performance expectations every day.

Development therefore needs to make sense in that environment and be useful when people return to work.

What We Did

Clemorton worked with leaders and teams to develop leadership and commercial capability using practical, business-focused development rather than generic management theory.

The approach connected leadership behaviour with the commercial and operational environment in which participants were working.

Stuart and Andy were personally involved in the work, bringing different but complementary perspectives around leadership, business performance, customers, people and commercial decision-making.

What Changed

The work helped participants connect their own leadership and commercial behaviour with the wider performance of the business.

It also reinforced an approach that has become central to Clemorton's work: development should create something people can use immediately rather than something that only makes sense in a training room.

The Clemorton Perspective

The best leadership development is grounded in the business.

People engage differently when conversations are about customers, decisions, colleagues and situations they actually encounter rather than hypothetical management scenarios.

That has shaped much of our work in aviation and logistics.
