Creating Greater Clarity Around Roles and Capability
Role Clarity · Capability · Performance

The Situation
As organisations develop, roles often evolve faster than the structures and expectations surrounding them.
Clemorton worked with Himoinsa UK, part of an international power generation business, to support greater clarity around roles, expectations and capability.

The Challenge
Job descriptions rarely provide enough detail to answer one of the most important questions an employee or manager can ask: “What does good performance actually look like in this role?”
When expectations remain implicit, employees may interpret the same role differently and managers can find themselves assessing performance against assumptions that have never been properly discussed.

What We Did
Working with the organisation, Clemorton helped define clearer expectations for specific roles, including operational and business support responsibilities.
The work examined what people needed to know, what they needed to be able to do and the behaviours expected in the role.
Employees were then able to consider their own capability against clearer expectations, with managers involved in reviewing and validating that understanding.
The work combined Clemorton's organisational and people experience with the capability of Calibrate Technology where appropriate.
What Changed
The approach created a clearer basis for conversations between employees and managers about expectations, capability and development.
Instead of relying solely on job descriptions or occasional performance conversations, the organisation could begin to build a more consistent view of what good looked like at role level.

The Clemorton Perspective
Role clarity sounds simple, but its absence creates problems throughout an organisation.
People cannot consistently meet expectations that have never been made clear.
Making those expectations visible creates a stronger foundation for performance, development and accountability.
